Review - The Crush
I loved this film! For a while in the middle I was totally horrified, but I loved it nonetheless. My thoughts after the first few minutes were, “Aww this is so cute!” But I kind of worried for the boy. I guess I always feel bad when little kids get crushes on older people they obviously cannot be with because they always end up getting their hearts broken when they dont understand why they can’t be with that person. So, I felt bad for the kid, and I immediately liked him. I also liked that the teacher was named “Miss Purdy” - the way a young child might say pretty.
After the boy met the fiance, however, I began to get a little freaked out by how upset and serious he was. I legitimately thought he was going to kill the fiance. I can’t say that I stopped liking the boy, because I have to admire someone so dedicated to love (in a way), but I definitely didn’t feel sorry for him anymore. But then I completely regained my respect for him at the end when it turned out that this was just an elaborate scheme to prove that the finacee wasn’t good enough, AND he proved his maturity by saying that the woman deserved someone better than himself. That almost made him seem (if not old enough) mature enough for her, in a way.
There were some interesting things that I noted about the way the film was made. For example, once the boy found out about the engagement, a lot of the shots of him when from being straight on to being at an angle of some kind, almost making him look bigger and more menacing. Additionally, after he talked to the fiance for the first time, it shows him walking across the field to go home again (like it did after he gave Miss Purdy the ring), but this time the sky is overcast and the color scheme is darker, reflecting the anger and hurt on his face. I also really enjoyed the irony of the fiance saying, “All is fair in love and war”. I knew that was going to come back to haunt him, and so it did.
